So after having done some basic stuff, natural progression takes you to professional stuff, right? This tuturial here http://www.secondpicture.com/tutorials/3d/mental_ray_in_3ds_max.html talks about mental ray rendering, which calculates the reflections real light would make. Sadly, this comp couldn't handle the step where you put "specular highlights" onto the diamond, it might have taken hours to finish the calculation and I only have most of the day. So my diamond to the left doesn't have anythign specular/spectacular about it, but the overall lighting of the picture IS prettier than on the original scene. And even if it didn't take hours to render, it did take 15 minutes, during which time only a BlitzIn chess application could run for me to watch grandmaster games, pieces dragging themselves across the board rather than flying because of the demands of this feature. Maybe I should stick to the basics.

My first experimental work in 3d max!!!! I'm so proud of it. :)
